Neck Pain Q & A

Why does my neck hurt?

Neck pain is one of the most common chiropractic complaints that Dr. McKillican treats. He provides thorough and effective care for:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Facet joint dysfunction
  • Forward head posture
  • Arthritis
  • Cervical radiculopathy
  • Cervical disc herniations
  • Tension headaches
  • Whiplash

Depending on the cause of your pain, Dr. McKillican determines an appropriate course of treatment to relieve your pain and improve the function of your neck — including your range of motion, posture, and neck strength.

What are the symptoms of neck pain?

Depending on the cause of your neck pain, your symptoms can vary and may include:

  • Throbbing, aching pain
  • Sharp, stabbing pain
  • Stiffness and tightness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Numbness and tingling down your arms
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Feeling of instability

These symptoms can differ in severity and may come and go depending on your daily activities. Certain activities can increase your risk of developing neck pain, including:

  • Looking down at a laptop or cellphone frequently
  • Poor posture
  • Sleeping on your stomach
  • Stress
  • Dehydration
  • Poor ergonomics, especially if you have to turn your head to look at your workstation

Dr. McKillican addresses these issues during your visit to determine how to prevent your pain from returning in the future. He may recommend exercises or stretches to improve your posture, alterations to your desk set-up to improve ergonomics, or strategies to deal with stress.

How is neck pain diagnosed?

Neck pain is diagnosed based on your medical and symptom history, a physical exam, and possibly imaging — including X-rays or an MRI. Dr. McKillican begins your visit by asking about your medical history, the location of your pain, and things that make your pain worse or better.

During your exam, Dr. McKillican measures your range of motion, muscle strength, and nerve sensation. He then takes you through a series of movements to determine which positions bother you or decrease your pain. With these movements, he may press on certain areas of your neck or shoulders, or press down on the top of your head to compress your spine.

If Dr. McKillican suspects you have extensive arthritis or a disc herniation, he may order X-rays or an MRI to determine the best course of treatment. Based on his findings, Dr. McKillican diagnoses the cause of your neck pain.

How is neck pain treated?

Neck pain is treated with a combination of chiropractic adjustments, hydromassage, manual therapy, stretches, and exercises. Dr. McKillican aims to reduce your pain while improving your range of motion and posture. He may also incorporate certain rehab exercises to build strength in your neck and the surrounding muscles.
